St. Ignace Public Library Part-Time Library Youth Assistant Job Description
Definition: The Library Youth Assistant performs a variety of library clerical and technical duties involving the circulation desk, reference service, and other library services to the public. In addition, this position will assist in planning and implementing library services for children, including community outreach and engagement. Employee is directly supervised by the Library Director.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
• Clerk Duties: Performs all functions at the circulation desk including checking materials out and in quickly and accurately, registering borrowers and issuing library cards, explaining library policies and procedures, and reference services.
o Perform opening and closing procedures as instructed, including daily monetary transactions
o Assist with the shelving of books and shelf-reading to keep collection in good order
o Interpret library tools, such a catalog and collection, according to procedures
o Process materials in the appropriate manner and time frame
o Assist with book weeding and inventory
o Assist patrons with various forms of technology within library parameters
• Programming:
• Assists Library Director in planning, recommending, coordinating, and implementing programs for children and teens. This includes, but is not limited to:
o Story Times for all ages
o Summer Reading Program
o Recurring monthly programs
o Special monthly programs
o Managing ongoing reading programs
o National Library reading events
o Community program and events support
o Outreach to area institutions and organizations that promote childhood literacy and wellness
• Knowledge and Other Required Skills/Responsibilities:
o Knowledge of various forms of technology within library parameters, or ability to acquire the necessary skills to fulfill this function
o Demonstrate patrons as number one priority with a helpful and pleasant attitude.
o Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates and the general public
o Exhibit and emphasize appropriate patron confidentiality
o Has the ability to lift and move boxes, equipment, and/or furniture up to fifty (50) pounds
o Must be able to hear normal sounds, distinguish sound as voice patterns, and communicate through human speech; use of telephone
o Ability to comprehend and follow instructions in verbal or written form
o Respond to public inquiries and complaints as appropriate for level of responsibility
o Flexible time/work schedule, including evenings and Saturday as a regular work day
o Punctuality required and effective time management
o Participation in training when appropriate in keeping with library trends
o Reliable to take initiative and work as part of a team when needed
o Maintain individual and shared workspaces in an orderly condition
o Actively promote library services, materials and activities
o Working knowledge of electronic devices and resources and willingness to learn new technology
o Understands library policies and procedures, and adheres to them as required
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Graduation from High School or GED required, Associate’s degree or higher preferred
• Experience working with the public; must enjoy and appreciate working with children
• Ability to operate a computer and associated software
• Library courses or some experience working in a library preferred
