SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In May 2001\, a group of men attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona\, through the deadliest region of the continent\, the “Devil’s Highway.” Three years later\, Luis Alberto Urrea wrote about what happened to them. The result was a national bestseller\, a Pulitzer Prize finalist\, a “book of the year” in multiple newspapers\, and a work proclaimed as a modern American classic. SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor\, Irene Miller
DESCRIPTION:Irene Miller\, a Holocaust survivor\, will take you on a survival journey little written and known about. You will sleep in the winter under an open sky on the no man’s land; you will freeze in a Siberian labor camp where the bears come to your door front. In Uzbekistan\, you will live on boiled grass or broiled onions\, and shiver with malaria. You will spend years in orphanages. When this is over you will wonder how a child with this background grows up to become a positive\, creative\, accomplished woman with a joy of living and love to share.

SUMMARY:Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 19\, at 5:15 PM in discussing “No One is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood. Copies of this book may be picked up at the circulation desk starting April 1. \n“a woman who has recently been elevated to prominence for her social media posts travels around the world to meet her adoring fans. She is overwhelmed by navigating the new language and etiquette of what she terms “the portal\,” where she grapples with an unshakable conviction that a vast chorus of voices is now dictating her thoughts. When existential threats—from climate change and economic precariousness to the rise of an unnamed dictator and an epidemic of loneliness—begin to loom\, she posts her way deeper into the portal’s void. An avalanche of images\, details\, and references accumulate to form a landscape that is post-sense\, post-irony\, post-everything. “Are we in hell?” the people of the portal ask themselves. “Are we all just going to keep doing this until we die?” \nSuddenly\, two texts from her mother pierce the fray: “Something has gone wrong\,” and “How soon can you get here?” As real life and its stakes collide with the increasingly absurd antics of the portal\, the woman confronts a world that seems to contain both an abundance of proof that there is goodness\, empathy\, and justice in the universe\, and a deluge of evidence to the contrary.“

Copies of this book may be picked up at the circulation desk starting April 1. \nGifty is a fifth-year candidate in neuroscience at Stanford School of Medicine studying reward-seeking behavior in mice and the neural circuits of depression and addiction. Her brother\, Nana\, was a gifted high school athlete who died of a heroin overdose after a knee injury left him hooked on OxyContin. Her suicidal mother is living in her bed. Gifty is determined to discover the scientific basis for the suffering she sees all around her. \nBut even as she turns to the hard sciences to unlock the mystery of her family’s loss\, she finds herself hungering for her childhood faith and grappling with the evangelical church in which she was raised\, whose promise of salvation remains as tantalizing as it is elusive. Transcendent Kingdom is a deeply moving portrait of a family of Ghanaian immigrants ravaged by depression and addiction and grief–a novel about faith\, science\, religion\, love. Exquisitely written\, emotionally searing\, this is an exceptionally powerful follow-up to Gyasi’s phenomenal debut.
