History Tidbits- Edward J. Chatelle

St. Ignace, Michigan

Edward J. Chatelle was born in Manistee, Michigan on October 15, 1880 and he came to St. Ignace with his parents in 1892. He worked at Jamieson’s sawmill and then became an apprentice printer at the St. Ignace Republican newspaper in 1898. He was promoted to ship foreman in 1907. After two more years of lumbering, he purchased  The Republican-News from Phillip Bissell in 1910. This newspaper had come about as a combination of the Republican and the St. Ignace News. This newspaper flourished and in 1933, he bough the St. Ignace Enterprise from Clyde Hecox. The newly combined newspaper was na,ed the Republican-News ad St. Ignace Enterprise.Mr. Chatelle passed away on May 29, 1964 at the age of 83.
