S.R. Vigeant arrived in St. Ignace from his native country, Canada, via Saginaw, Michigan in 1888. He procured land and built a two-story building, with family living quarter above. He was a merchant offering Singer sewing machines, household furnishings, pianos, organs, accordions and other musical instruments. He would order any type of instrument you needed and many were sold on the installment plan.
One of his sons, Don, when young, served as the city’s lamplighter. Later, Don ran a store called The Yellow Front, across State Street from the railroad passenger depot. He did a good business selling tobacco, candy, postcards, souvenirs and fishing supplies.
