On a Sunday in July, 1935, a squad comprised of Michigan State Police and Mackinac County law enforcement officers carried out a raid on an illegal Mackinac Island gambling establishment. Twenty slot machines, valued at $50.00 each and a complete dice game table were seized.
The slot machines- of the nickel, dime and quarter variety- yielded nearly $400.00. The confiscated equipment was brought to the courthouse in St. Ignace. The machines were smashed and the money taken to the bank. The funds paid county expenses and the remainder reverted to state coffers.
Later that summer, several more raids targeted gambling houses on the island, in Cedarville, Hessel and at Brevort Lake.
